Nikon D3100. Hands down. Has guide screens on it to give you step by step instructions how to get the results you want. Eases you from fully auto compact camera type operation to fully manual when you're ready to experiment on your own. Leave it on fully automatic or put it in one of the semi or fully manual modes when you're ready. Gives you easy access to fully automatic to fully manual 1080p full HD video mode.

The one in your hands.

Pay a visit to a dealer who'll let you handle them and pick up a couple of candidates, seeing which you like best.

Get the Nikon D3100. You can grow with the brand forever. Don't get hung up on which brand is better, both are great. At this point in time I prefer what Nikon has to offer on the professional level.

First answer this question: What is your budget or money you have in hand?

There's everything for everyone. If you have less money than go for Nikon D3100 and if your bank balance is full of currency then get Nikon's new entry D800. Choice is your.

I'm saving up for the Canon EOS Rebel T3i at the moment. I think this camera is good. But that's because I prefer Canon over Nikon. That's just me though. So, if I were you, I would check out that Nikon D3100 that everyone is talking about, and also check out the Canon EOS Rebel series. Choose which camera would be best for you. When choosing between these two brands, it usually comes down to which one would be more comfortable for you to use. The functions and set up of the camera and it's ease of access.

I've talked to a professional photographer who uses a Nikon on her gigs, but she said she started her nephew on a Canon EOS Rebel. The Rebels are said to be good for beginners and also professionals. This is because they are said to be simple to use.

So take a look at the Nikon D3100 and the Canon EOS Rebel series, and you choose. Watch lots of reviews on YouTube and look at example pictures.
