Buying a second hand lens is not a good thing… Unless you know how to fix minor problems…

if you can't afford brand new, then hire lenses…

I would limit my purchase of used equipment to the three sites Edwin provided above.

There are dealers on eBay too, people with a good reputation. Prices will be higher from a dealer, but they know what they are selling, know the worth of them and stand behind them. Dealers usually only have a 'Buy it Now' price. There won't be any bargains, but you are buying an honestly listed lens.

One tip is to always look in the cameras for sale category, people think that the value is in the camera and list it in that category, when the reality is that the camera is worth very little, but the lens on the front of it is worth more. I recently bought a Pentax ME Super simply because it had a Pentax A 50mm f1.7 lens on it, It cost less than £20 carriage included, I could sell the lens for £40 - £60 plus post and packing any day of the week on eBay in the Pentax lens category.

You do need to know what your buying and do your research. Avoid any that mention fungi. Fungi can be the death of any lens, it eats into the glass.

Unfortunately because of the long lens mount to sensor distance on Nikon cameras there are only a few Nikon lenses you can use on current Nikon DSLR cameras, lenses made for Nikon or by Nikon.

Pentax is the best at backwards compatibility, with any Pentax A lens you are only loosing auto focus, everything else works the same as any modern lens does and works in any mode. And you get image stabilisation with all of them.

The micro 4/3 system is probably the best, they can use lenses from any manufacturer including lenses designed for TV and 35mm movie cameras.

I've had good lenses from Amazon and Adorama.

For old MF film stuff, I got three lenses for my Minolta body from eBay for under $50 and they are in awesome condition. My friend shoots a Pentax K-x only with old lenses for 35mm cameras, he got them all from eBay.

tl;dr old film stuff go to eBay, new stuff Amazon or Adorama
