What's wrong with my Nikon AF-S DX 18 - 55mm f/3.5 - 5.6G ED?

The lens will not focus, it might be jammed but it is not always hard to turn the lens to zoom in and out, does anyone know what could possibly be wrong with it? Has anyone had problems with this lens before?

Added (1). Was not purchased from Nikon store.

Above all don't force the lens to turn. It needs to be sent to Nikon. Do it your self or a camera dealer will charge you twice actual repair cost. Dumpster dive for shipping box and packing peanuts. Always describe the problem, be sure to ask for an estimate if not covered under warranty. And word it that way!

I had a similar problem after moving to a colder climate. I stored the camera in a small closet on an outside wall of my house. This of course was not under warranty.

First make sure the lens and the camera are in autofocus mode. The lens will have a switch and the camera may have a switch. Next, understand that the zoom and the focus are two separate things. Find the focus ring, put the switch in manual, and try to manually focus without forcing it. If no success, it is time to return it to Nikon. Go online to find out how.
