What Type Of Camera Would Be Best For Me? - 1

I've been saving $$ for a new camera but there are so many options I really don't know what is best for me. I'm looking for something that will take GOOD quality pics and maybe even record. (my ipod is just not cutting it anymore) I mainly need it for end of the year trip and graduation, D. I was thinking Nikon or Canon but i don't really know. (i kind of want a camera similar to a professional/ photographer one but not too expensive.) Any suggestions?
