All current Nikon DSLR cameras take DX AF and AF-S with the exception of the D700, D3s and D3x which take FX lenses

the Nikon D3000, D3100, and D5000 can't autofocus with AF lenses. If you want autofocus, you will need AF-S lenses

And in addition to that, Sigma, tamron and tokina also make autofocus lenses for nikon. Sigma's hsm and Tamron's Built-in-motor (BiM) are also suited for the D3000/d5000 and other motorless bodies

Nikon invasive - No compatibility, can't be converted
Nikon AI generation - fits. Meters on D200/300, D700, D2/3.MF only.
Nikon AF generation - fits. Needs in body motor to AF. No AF on D40/x, D60, D3000/3100, D5000
Nikon AF-S - fits.AF on all cameras.

Sigma HSM/motorized- AF on all cameras
Tamron USD/motorized - AF on all cameras
Sigma/Tamron no motor - No AF on D40/x, D60, D3000/3100, D5000

Carl Zeiss ZE and ZE II - Manual focus only, meters on all cameras.

M42 - Adapters available. Infinity focus requires the use of an adapter with optic. Acts in the same way as an AI lens, no metering on low end cameras.

Leica R - adapters are available, though some lenses incompatible case specific. Acts as an AI lens.
