Nikon SLR Cameras

What kind of camera is best for journalism?

I've just recently gotten into journalism school for news writing, and I'd like to buy a decent camera for school, my career, and for personal use as well.

I've had two cameras before; one was a Nikon Cool Pix and the other was a Canon (I can't remember the type, it's been so long). I liked the Nikon because it was compact, had a relatively quick shutter button, and was simple to use. However, I'd like to get something a little more professional since I plan to use this camera for my job in a couple of years.

Does anyone have any good recommendations? Any advice would be appreciated!

1) As a journalist you do NOT need a camera. You are a writer.

2) IF you become a news photographer or a "photo-journalist" (often travel writers are photo-journalists) then you would need a still camera.

If you are talking digital SLR, then I suggest either a Nikon D5000 worth about $US2, 500 for the body only or a Canon EOL which is slightly cheaper.
You would need a standard lens, a wide angle lens (around 18mm) and a telephoto (either a 300mm or a 500mm). Some people will suggest combinations of zoom lenses to cover those areas while others recommend fixed lenses. It is your personal choice.
I would also recommend a "doubler" (2 times) attachment to double the focal length of the lens.
You would also need a good "flash" set. A good sturdy carry bag plus a good light-weight tripod are also essential.
You would also need a laptop and connectors etc to load the pictures onto the laptop and transmit them to your outlet from the scene.

In all, you are talking about spending about $US 6, 000 to $US 10, 000 for good equipment.
