What is a great digital camera for filming?

I still want to use it for my photography classes; however, I'm desiring a camera that's amazing at filming.

I've always wanted the Sony NEX or the Nikon J1; however, I do not know much about the cameras besides their 1080p video and their hype.

If you are looking for something high end and are willing to pay around $1000, you should check out the Canon DSLR's. If you are a beginner, you could look at the Canon EOS Rebel T3i. I personally do not own one but I hear that it is a great camera for beginners and takes awesome video.

The answer is NONE

Digital cameras can only shoot video.

You need to spend some time on the Nikon and Sony websites and see for yourself which camera will provide you with what you need.

If your true goal is to shoot video, you really need a video camera.

The best for VIDEO is a camcorder but since you want to do both photos and video in one camera then let's go lower.

Almost all current model dSLR's do video. In the same price range, an SLT (from Sony) would do better in video than a dSLR. SLT's take photos too.

NEX and J's are a notch lower in price range. You can use them for both photos and videos. Lower than mirrorless cameras are the bridges. They have smaller digital sensors and the lenses are fixed.

So what's the best? None really. It's all about budget, preference, some unique feature you can't live without or plain salesman stubbornness. If you don't know what to look out for, just stay within budget. Don't worry. Photo and video quality depends mostly on user skill anyway. The camera is only a tool. You should get the same quality of work no matter what camera you use. The more expensive cameras only offer more controls for those who know how to use it. For now, you can stick with a cheaper camera and learn from it although you could buy a very good camera now and take lessons on how to use it properly. It all goes down to what you are willing to do.
