It seems there are quite a few brands out there to choose from and I don't know which to pick!

Nikon and Canon. These seem to be quite Common. But then again a lot of professionals also use Sony. What is your opinion?

Nikon or Canon is preferable, more choice of lenses and accessories

I've yet to see three professionals that use sony.

Choosing a camera is difficult. Start by establishing a budget, determine what you want to do and how likely it is that you will invest in extra lenses.

From my experience
cannon has die hard followers so it must be a good product
and it has a cool name
only with one of these can you say oh look at that cat imma shoot it, with my cannon

nikons are often more expensive and come with less, arguably useless features ex my d60 has a lower megapixel count by 2 vs a rebel xti but it in reality that means almost nothing( there would be a difference if it were 5 to 15 but within 2 means very little)
most people will agree also that nikons have better coloration and therefore better quality pictures

and sorry but i know very little about sony as i was told by my photo teacher (a professional photographer to not evn bother with them

but when it comes down to it go with pentax though i love my nikon i regret not buying a pentax
less known and expensive but great
also cannons are now mass produced enough to be sold at wal mart so i'm n ot sure on there quality anymore( more made= more must be flawed)

Professionals use Hasselblad and Mamiya. Guys with jobs use everything else. I saw a guy with a Fuji s1500 running a old-thyme photobooth. He's a professional with a job taking pictures. We answer questions on here from a million kids who saw a commercial telling them about Canon or Nikon.

It's all branding and it's all bullshoot. The more you hear about something the more you will pay for the advertising. A $600 camera, $200 worth of that cost is caught up in advertising. I mouthwash for $1 by a no name brand simply because Listerine costs $4.50. Go to the store and see which specific model you are happy with. And don't forget to do your research.

The angry thumbs downs you see under me are people having an identity defense episode. They bought into all the branding and have to defend their identity as Canons or Nikons by attacking me. Google Piaget. If you've ever wondered why we say the camera doesn't matter but then pick on people for their camera; that's why.

Who told you a lot of professionals use Sony dSLR's?

Sony video cameras are used by professional videographers, but certainly NOT still photographers

Nikon and Canon are the brands used by us pros.

The pendulum has swung toward Nikon over the past three years with the introduction of the D3 and now D3s with their exceptional low noise at high ISO's
