Nikon SLR Cameras

What camera is comparable to the Nikon 1?

I've played with the Nikon 1 in the store, and LOVE it. It's just a little more than I'd like to spend right now. Are there any cameras that are comparable in features that don't cost quite as much?
I'm not a serious photographer, just need a new camera that will take good pictures to scrapbook.

NONE

It is a unique product.

It has a sensor that is larger than ANY P&S camera but smaller than a typical dSLR. The camera is designed to be compact and easily carried around and will probably be used by advanced amateur photographers who want the control of a fully adjustable camera, but not the mass of a dSLR camera system

The Nikon 1 system will do exactly what you want… Take excellent photos.

Almost All EVIL (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens) cameras are in the price range of the Nikon 1 camera system.

If you love the Nikon 1 then wait a little while, here in the UK they are discounting them heavily. It may be worthwhile holding on to see where Canon is going with it's "G" series compacts, if the next one of these has an APS-C size sensor and interchangeable lenses it'll be an instant class leader.

If you are really sure you must have this type of camera now, then look at the Olympus Pen, and Sony Nex cameras, in terms of complete systems they are far more developed than the Nikon. Pointless, but more defined in their pointlessness!

I'm not sure what to make of it.

I'm sure it is capable of great photos and fully manual settings.

It does look very posh.

The Nikon 1 is a hybrid camera. There are lots of models from different brands out there and they would all be different from one another. At the moment, the hybrid class doesn't really have a standard. It's the murky zone between point-and-shoot and dSLR.
