Which canon is comparable to a nikon d90?

Is it a good camera? Please show me any pictures you have taken with it (the canon comparable to the nikon d90).

The most directly comparable model would be the Canon 60D, although it is more contemporary to the 50D.

Changing to Nikon is not going to do anything for you. Upgrading your XS is not going to do anything for you. A new lens may or may not do anything for you.

What it sounds like is that you have reached the point where you need to actually learn how to to make the camera do what you want it to do, and stop letting the camera do the thinking for you. A new camera will not make your pictures any better, this is a common misconception. Getting the camera out of green box auto, and actually learning how to use it, will make your pictures better.
