What type of camera? DSLR, mirrorless, pocket?
I would avoid Nikon for pocket cameras. Other mfgrs have better products. If you're looking for a pocket camera, look to the 1" sensor cameras like the Canon GX9 and Sony RX100.

DSLRs, they are pretty much the same as the other mfgrs out there. Support service (repair) is good to excellent. It comes down to personal preference on the ergonomics of the camera. The one lens I have been blown away with in the Nikkor lineup is the 200-500mm zoom lens. Amazing lens for the price. If you want to shoot video with a DSLR, perhaps Sony or Canon would be a better choice. However, I shoot with a camcorder over a DSLR for video as it's much easier to do setup with a camcorder and time limits aren't an issue.

Don't know about their mirrorless line.

The only cameras Nikon makes that I'd even look at are their DSLRs.

The main disadvantages are;

The budget D3xxx and D5xxx series have no body motors, meaning they only allow autofocus with a limited number of lenses.

Both also lack the ability to meter with legacy lenses - although such lenses will fit (unlike Canon).

Image stabilisation (like Canon) is only included in a limited number of lenses.

Weather-sealing and pentaprism (brighter) viewfinders are only available from the D7xxx series and up.

If you buy a Pentax, legacy lenses will fit, and allow metering. All Pentax bodies have motors, weather-sealing, pentaprism viewfinders, in-body shake reduction, and built-in intervalometers. The Pentax K-70 offers the performance of the D7xxx series with the price of the D5xxx series - but if you want a badge, go ahead.
