Canon and Nikon are pretty much the best in the market. I have used the same Canon body for over 30 years in some pretty trying conditions. It's film, but it shows the quality and toughness that they make their machines with.

I started out with a Nikon D40x and got some great use and results. You can still pick up a refurbished camera body from a few camera stores for less than $250 or even pick up a used one from craigslist or other similar sites.

The question is a little fan based until you get into really higher end camera models. I would suggest looking over your options and watching reviews on each camera before making a purchase. I personally use a cannon T1i and am told frequently to switch to Nikon. Thus far people love my pictures and always ask to see more so I assume the Nikon people are simply fans trying to pick a side opposed to do better work. Much of what I learned though I taught myself. One magazine I like to speak well of is "Practical Photography" I has many practice tasks in it.

PENTAX has been known to out-perform both Nikon and Canon. But Pentax doesn't spend a lot of money advertising because they don't really need to. Pentax has had a loyal following for decades from generations of photographers who swear by Pentax's quality of construction, durability, photo quality, and camera features.

The Pentax KX is allegedly for the more advanced beginner, but I just started Photography class at college last year with absolutely no knowledge of how to use a digital SLR camera and using the KX was not difficult at all. It seems to be more user friendly from what I've seen compared to the Nikon or Canons I've seen my classmates use.

I bought my Pentax KX at Tigerdirect.com, but they are also available at B&H Photo and Adorama, among other places.

My Pentax KX is white, but the camera comes in basic black, and red from the websites listed above. My unique little KX is more lightweight than the others, but heavy on features and older film lenses from other K-mount cameras like Cosina and Ricoh can be used on the Pentax KX DSLR camera. The Nikon and Canon cameras either don't have that capability, or has limited compatibility with older film lenses.

B&H Photo has the newer Pentax K-R
