Were cannon mate 35mm cameras made by canon?

I recently got into photography and have been offered some very old 35mm cameras like the nikon L35AF. My dad recently gave me a cannon mate AE 21 and i can't find any information about the camera online. I was just wondering if cannon mate is a sub-brand of canon or maybe canon is the new name of cannon mate?

If it's spelled, 'Cannon,' probably not.
CANON make some nice cameras.

Cannon Mate are toy cameras that cost less than $1 to make, any weight they appear to have comes from lead blanks in the body. They are cheap and so badly made you'd be luck to get a single roll of film through one. They have absolutely nothing to do with Canon!
