I know nothing about cameras, just a warning
I have a Nikon d1700 and everytime I take pictures and I import them to iPhoto, only about 1/4 of them import. It says the others can't be imported. I thought it was because they were.nef but also a few.jpg weren't importing(But mostly.nef).

You need to adopt the workflow most of us have used for at least a decade.

At the end of each shooting day, remove the memory card and insert it into a card reader, either the one on your computer or a USB 3.0 card reader you have purchased.

Using your computer skills (and Finder), copy all your images to a new file folder you have named for the subject/location and date (so you can find them years later)

Once they are all safely on your computer, insert the memory card into the camera (D7100 probably, not a D1700) and using the format feature on your camera and format the card. Do this routinely. If you do not know how to do that, look on page 32 and 262 in your user manual

Unless you were shooting RAW (NEF) + JPEG, then all you will see are RAW images files. By copying all of the image files from the card using your computer skills, there's NO guess work when it comes to what files are copied and which are not.

As time goes on, you will find that you will start to shoot RAW images only and then using Lightroom CC, process those RAW image files and export just the best of the best as JPEG images which you can then share with your friends and family on your social network or personal website.

My fear is that you are expecting your Apple computer to do all your thinking for your when it comes to copying your images to your computer. Now is a good time to establish a more logical workflow.

Use a cheap USB card reader to connect the camera's memory card directly to the Mac's USB port. When recognized, use Finder to do the copying for total control over what goes where exactly.
