Tried using my 300mm telephoto lens, thoughts?

Just received my long awaited Nikon d7100, and busted out my 300 mm lens f/4.0, decided to go shooting some wildlife nearby and shot this egret. Any critique I should be know for future shots?

May just be the compression for posting here but those curved lines on the left hand side are caused by using too much jpg compression.
