Thinking of jumping ship from nikon to canon?

I currently own a Nikon but want to get a new FX sensor camera. I been reading reviews and it seems for landscape/outdoor photography the Canon 5 Mk II for the money/quality is better then Nikon. What do you think?

I have been using Canon machines for over 30 years. I have had no problems. Not saying Nikon is bad, just saying.

5D Mark II or D700? They're both excellent cameras.

If you're already invested in good lenses for the Nikon I see no reason to change brands.

Whichever one you use, you'll master the fine points and there won't be 2 cents worth of difference in image quality.

One thing to keep in mind: Both will probably be updated this coming year, or replaced entirely with the latest greatest new thing!

Try them out and choose the one that fits your hand most comfortably!

Whenever I hear someone thinking that they need to upgrade their gear, I always ask them for a good reason. So what is your good reason? A 35 mm sensor will give you two immediate benefits: shallower depth of field and wide angle lenses are indeed wide angle. However, a good photographer never has problems with depth of field, regardless of the gear. And Canon and Nikon have developed superior wide angle lenses for so-called (and misnamed) "crop" cameras. The larger sensors may have better low light performance and higher resolution. However, the advantages are generally beyond the ability of the human eye to discern. Canon and Nikon cameras are equally good. There's a see-sawing of which is best from month to month as new gear comes out. But truly, the differences, as I said, are beyond the human eye's ability to discern.

I repeat, so what is your good reason? When someone is unhappy with their camera it is often a sign of inexperience. In most cases, its not the camera that is at fault, but the photographer's inexperience. Get more expensive gear and you won't see an improvement unless you, the photographer, upgrade yourself.

It's gonna cost you a for-tune just to get a gadget. There's not a dime's worth of difference between the two cameras as far as imaging is concerned. Buy studio lights instead.

I totally agree with joedlh and also wonder: why?

The way your question is phrased, ie without a single reason as to why you want to switch, I can only think that it is probably for a bad reason. Then again, it is your money and you are free to waste it any way you choose.

Go ahead and jump ship. A better camera is no guarentee of better pictures, regardless of sensor size. One has to remember, its the 'equipment' behind the equipment that counts…

My Fuji S-5 (a modified D-200) takes the same images, DPF wise, with a FX or a MX lens. Because the image is only cropped image with it's APS-c size chip as compaired to a full frame chip.
.
Only thing lacking IS the wide angle aspect and the needing of wider lenses than normal to get there.
