Suggestions for a good SLR camera?
I'm 14 years old and I'm really interested in photography, so for christmas my parents said they will get me an SLR camera. But I don't know which one to get? I heard Nikon cameras are great? Any good suggestions? Oh and it can't be too expensive.
I just did a lot of research on that, and I ended up with the Sony Cybershot DSC-HX30V, which has won a lot of awards for Best Digital under $400, Best Travel Zoom, Best Point & Shoot, etc.
This is one of the good sites to do research on:

If you get on that one and scroll down, you can pinpoint what type of camera you want, what budget, etc.
Good luck! Photography is an awesome hobby -- and one you can make money with eventually, if you want.
DSLRs aren't cheap, Nikon start with the D3200 at around £490 with 18-55mm (although you may get the older D3100 or Canon's 1100D a little cheaper). Sony do SLTs (fixed mirror and EVF- which are better for video) under the Alpha name which start a little higher. Their Cybershot range are compact/bridge cameras, not DSLRs.
Apart from the very good or the very bad, 35mm film SLRs aren't available new (the Nikon F6 is superb but expensive, and their third-party made FM10 is no great shakes. The Promaster 2000K has a nasty habit of breaking at critical moments).
If you are in the UK then look at Argos. They are selling Nikon D3000 with lens for under £300.It is an old discontinued model but that doesn't mean it won't give you some great results.
Please don't get Nikon, fake photographers have them. Serouisly. Canon all the way. A good SLR you could get is the Canon 550D or 600D. All big Youtubers use Canon and most proffesional photographers.
At your age, if you don't care about video recording, the canon 1000D is around $300 a little bit old, but worth it.
if you want the best band for the buck dslr, the 600D is $400, 1080p video and 18mp sensor.
if you are really into photography consider buying other lenses and not using the kit lens for 10 years.
Nikon are widely used in the united states while Canon more Europe it seems. If you know anyone with a DSLR then maybe one the same make as them? They can then help you and borrow lenses etc. Canon and Nikon are both pretty good, their entry level cameras are good too. They come with on-screen help on the lcd if you are a beginner into photography.
Hope this helps
