If the 18-55 mm lens at 18 mm is not wide enough for you, the wide angle lens you need for the cropped sensor D5300 would be either the Nikkor AF-S 12-24 mm or 10-24 mm lens. Tokina makes very good lenses and the 12-28 mm lens is one you may want to consider

The details in an image are captured by the sensor on your camera and by using the cameras highest resolution, you will get the most detail, dynamic range, colour depth and low noise performance.

There's NO benefit of owning a prime wide angle lens that could justify the cost of buying a 14 mm wide angle lens ($1,900) for your camera.

Not sure what you mean by "lose detail." With a wide-angle lens your perspective is that of standing much further away from your subject than if you were using a standard 50mm or 70mm lens. Therefore, small detail could get lost as a result. Having a nice sharp high-quality lens would help.

NO! Just the opposite using prime lenses render images better than zoom lenses. BUT here is the situation, if you regularly make 11x14's & 16x20's from the prime lens you will see the difference especially in cropped images. But if you only shoot & print 4x6's then don't waste your money.
