Pixel Oppilas Wireless Remote Control for Nikon?

I recently purchased the Pixel Oppilas Wireless Remote Control for Nikon and it obviously connects. The remote will autofocus the camera with a half press, but will not actually take a shot when I press it all the way down. Is this a setting I have on my camera, or is it a defective remote? Has this happened to anyone else?

Added (1). I've tried covering the viewfinder, and it's not making a difference. The camera is definitely autofocusing completely. It acts like it wants to take the photo and it sounds like the shutter moves a little, but the photo doesn't actually take. Any idea what that could be?

When the camera autofocuses, do you get the confirmation "beep" the focus has locked? If not, the camera will not take a photo. Especially if you are testing the camera on a tabletop, this can happen.

You can verify this by putting the lens into manual focus - and the camera should fire regardless. This will at least test the shutter release. If it works in manual, the camera is probably not focusing in autofocus.

Also, there's a little cover that goes over the viewfinder eyepiece that came with your camera. Put that on, as sometimes incident light coming through the viewfinder can interfere with the focus system (normally when you look through the viewfinder, your head blocks incident light from doing this).

Also, I have had some issues with cheap 3rd party remotes - but others have worked fine. There's nothing inside of the remote but a two position mechanical switch.

Take it out under the sun and stand 12 feet away from your subject. Try first without the remote. If the camera shoots, try with the remote. If the remote doesn't allow the camera to fire, there's something wrong with it.
