Photojournalism: prime vs zoom lenses?
Which is most convenient? Or is it better to have one of each?
We use both.
For sports, I use a Nikkor 200 mm f/2.0, 300 mm f/2.8 or 400 mm f/2.8 prime lenses
In addition, I carry a 14-24 mm, 24-70 mm and 70-200 mm lens as my standard kit when not assigned to shoot sports
I also carry two full frame digital SLR cameras, an old D3 and a D800e
Being a photojournalist is NOT about convenience, but about having the right tools at the right times
If you need to be able to understand what various lenses "see", look at the link below. Photojournalists will thrive with as much zoom as they can lay their hands on so the best for them would be something like the 18-300mm zoom lens. They're all about just capturing the shot as opposed to most of us who'd want get the best shot possible instead.
