This question is asked about 78, 000 times a day. Nikon, Pentax, Sony, Olympus and Canon all make great cameras. Compared to Nikon and Sony, Canon's most recent offerings are a little behind in terms of technology, but they;re still good cameras.

Go to CNET.com and read reviews of the camera. Then you can make up your own mind. There are fans on both sides. Both brands have a very good reputation.

They're both great. You will have awesome results with both.

The only advantage Canon has is that used lens are cheaper. But that's pretty much it.

I would own a Nikon in a heartbeat and I'm a die hard Canon guy.
Borrowed a D300/D800 and loved them just as much as the 60D/5D Mark II.

NEITHER!

The only difference between them is personal preference - and there are other DSLR manufacturers.

Obviously, you aren't ready for a DSLR if you know only two manufacturers and think there's a difference between them

This type of question gets asked about which Camera Manufacture or Camera Model is better or recommended far too often which I've said this many times before and I'll say this once again.

It comes down to personal preference where some may like how Nikon feels in their hands or how the layout of the Nikon Cameras are. Vice Verse on Canon Cameras.

Nikon fans would be saying to get Nikon. Same thing with Canon Fans where they would be saying to get Canon.

Independent testing by DxOMark labs reveals that the top 10 DSLRs include 5 Nikons, three Phase One (medium format DSLR), two Pentax, and 0 Canon.

You be the judge.

And Nikon APS format DSLRs have larger sensors than Canon - probably one reason that testing results in no Canon in the top 10 list.

Also, Canon is known to tweak their color saturation and sharpness so that while unnatural, it makes the photo look better. Nikon could do the same thing, but they chose to keep a more natural looking photo. You might ask then why Canon feels they need to do this if their cameras were better?

But at the DSLR level, it is as much the photographer as the camera.

Neither. Both are the same. Hasselblad is better.

If you're a beginner, you're most likely asking yourself: Nikon or Canon? Really, I feel confident in saying that you can't go wrong with either. I've used both brand's cameras extensively and find that they both offer amazing image quality with well-built, solid cameras that, if taken care of, will last decades. The best way to choose between these is go to camera shop and try out these cameras and see which suits best to you.
