Both are excellent camera manufactures, in fact, they produce most of the camera professionals use.

So which is best, is up to you. MB or BMW, Pepsi or Coke, Chevy or Ford?

The one with the most features for the investment would be a good start or the one that is the easiest for you to use or navigate the menu.

Most bang for the buck?

Nikon D3100 or Canon 550D at the entry level or Nikon D3s or Canon 1D, Mark IV at the pro end of things

It's not really about which is best, it's about which is best for you.

Both are good. The "best" is the one which YOU decide is best for you.
