Nikon j1 or Gopro Hero 3?

I have $300-$400 to spend on a new camera and am going to Hawaii this summer. I love to film and love the versatility of the gopro, but at the same time I really enjoy taking pictures so that's what has me also considering the Nikon. Which would you get and why?

The GoPro is a specialty camera, and it's primary purpose is for taking action video, especially when the subject is close up (as it has a wide angle lens). It excels at this.
However, it is not so good at long distances or photos. This is not the primary function of the GoPro.
If you want a general purpose camera, then the Nikon J1 will far exceed the capability of the GoPro, as this is not the intended purpose of the GoPro.

The Gopro is not actually a versatile camera, it has one specific job, to survive in hostile action environments so that it can give close-up action footage for video. It has no zoom, and would be a very expensive wide-angle-only camera if you want a general camera. Your choice to make.
