Nikon 1 J1 or Sony A200?

My son has a Sony a200 SLR camera and wants to sell it to get a Nikon 1 J1

My view ( why sell an slr and buy a digital which costs more)
his view ( J1 is compact and i love the features advertised online)

It s him again

J1 is compact and has interchangeable lenses. Personally I'd prefer something like a Panasonic TZ20 which has a huge zoom range and fits in your pocket. But at the end of the day it depends on what type of photos you want to take. There are plenty of camera comparison websites.

Neither.

Can you send him back?

There's nothing wrong with the A200 (some would say it isn't a Nikon, but that's hardly a flaw) whereas the J1 is overpriced, has a tiny sensor and is only compact because you can't afford a useful lens to put on it without selling a kidney.

I'd only change cameras if one broke, and even then, I'd stick to what I know.

I think he's making a monumental mistake, throwing money away on a decision he'd quickly regret. Unfortunately, if it's his money to waste (if it's your money, you can tell him where to go) it's his mistake to make.

Well, there may be better reasons to change camera systems.

The two cameras are totally different in purpose.

One is a dSLR and uses interchangeable lenses and like most, rather large

The other, the Nikon 1, is designed to produce high quality images in a small package, use interchangeable lenses and one that can fit into a briefcase or purse with a second lens.

I suggest you visit a proper camera shop and look at the Nikon 1 and either the latest Sony alpha series camera or the new Nikon D3200. My guess is that your son is not happy with his results using the A200. You need to remind your son that just changing cameras will NOT produce better photos. That will always be dependent upon his sills using such a camera

I went to PC World looking for a DSLR and came away with the J1. The J1 has the latest sensor technology making the picture quality comparible to that of DSLRs and the multi-picture feature can actually choose the best picture for you. It's compact size means that it's easy and convenient to carry around - even in your pocket.

I can definitely recommend the J1.

PS: If you can afford, consider the Twin-Lens pack (see link). This offers considerable savings over buying the second lens separately.
