My first DSLR camera?

I'm going to soon buy my first DSLR camera. I'm looking at Nikon. Should I buy a kit, or the body and the lens? Also, do you have any recommendations for a good first DSLR camera?

The kit lenses are just fine, but the really hot camera to buy now would be the Nikon D3100 with a 18-200 mm VR zoom.
