More to the panasonic g3?

I've bought the panasonic g3 DSLR camera for months now and it's great and everything.

My question is i see my friends with these bigger canon or nikon DSLR cameras and i notice their pictures are much more creative in terms of the different color filters and BACKGROUND BLUR which totally makes focal points of pictures stand out.

This g3 lens are 14-42mm/ F3.5-5.6 ASPH

I would like to know what is;

1) responsible for the HIGH BACKGROUND BLUR (that i don't get much of with this g3) in other cameras and

2) does the large variety of color filter options come with the camera? Or the lens?

3) what i should look for when i'm getting a DSLR camera?

Your Panasonic G3 is not a DSLR, it's an "ILC" (Interchangeable Lens Camera) or sometimes refered to as an "EVIL" (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens - camera).

Background blur is created by having a shallow Depth Of Field (DOF), such that your subject is in focus, but the background is out of focus. You create shallow depth of field (DOF) by using a wide open aperture (smallest f/number) and making sure your subject is far enough away from their background.

Color filtering can by achieved in at least three separate ways: Literally using a physical filter screwed onto the end of the lens. In camera, using "filter modes" (your camera has this ability). Or preferably in many cases in software when editing with a computer.

Panasonic's G3 is a very nice little camera, and you should learn to use it before thinking about switching to a DSLR - all the creative concepts remain the same! Looking on the bright side here, your camera will shoot better video than *any* DSLR, only Sony SLT's do this better! The only downsides to using such an ILC/EVIL are, the lack of a dedicated focusing sensor, and the electronic viewfinder - in every other way your camera is a good match for it's peers.
