Mercapto Mix/MBT/Latex Allergy - DSLR Camera?

Tracy W

I have an allergy to Mercapto Mix and MBT (Accelorators used in the manufacture of rubber).

I'm trying to find a DSLR camera I can use, but most of them seem to have grippers on which SEEM to be rubber. There are cameras out there with metal bodies in the smaller more compact ranges, but I'm specifically trying to break into proper DSLR photography.

I have emailed Panasonic, Sony, Canon and Nikon, and so far, not had much joy. Nikon have told me outright not to buy ANY of their products! Panasonic and Sony told me to speak to my doctor (?) as they can't advise on medical issues (!) and Canon have said they will look into it. Not heard anything yet.

Has anyone out there got the same allergy and got a nice DSLR camera that doesn't give them blisters? I'd love to buy the Nikon 5200 but they have said not to(!) (just in case, I suppose… ), or I'd love to buy a Cannon 600d or 550d. The Sonys also look nice., Really, I'd go for any nice DSLR that didn't have a rubber grip or rubber lens ring on it.

Can anyone help?

Rubber is a common element used in the dSLR's

All you can do it buy Nitrile gloves.

My guess it that if you are a disciplined shooter, your face will not be in contact with the camera when shooting.

While I don't represent a manufacturer and therefore can't comment with any sense of authority, I can inform you that rubbers (or elastomers) come in various different forms, produces naturally or synthetically using a whole variety of processes. I can also say that an allergy to latex is not an uncommon problem, and the general direction has been to move towards the synthetic elastomers which don't trigger negative reactions, wherever the specific properties of latex and latex derived materials is not essential.

If your allergy is not a Type I, then I suggest that you try a contact test by visiting a shop and trying it. If it's doesn't work out then I can also advise the following:

The eyecup is removable on all Canon DSLRs. You can buy Silicone Camera Armour which will completely cover the elastomer on the camera.
