I have sony because i like their lenses, but for your use canon would be the best as there's so much more choice of equipment. The choice of camera depends on your needs and budget, the trick is to buy the best that you can afford especially lenses which you will not want to change as much as bodies.

If you want a true "pro" camera from Canon you're looking at at least $2, 500 or more.

If you can use a consumer model dslr, since I'm a Canon guy, I'll recommend the t3i. Of course all Canon Rebel models are excellent but the t3i is the newest offering in the line at 18mp, 1080 HD video and an articulated screen for those odd video angles you may want.

I do lots of portraits with my t1i and have excellent results but you may want more. Here's a good place to do more research.

Nothing to chose between Canon and Nikon except who will give you the best deal and back-up service. You can't go wrong with either. If you already have kit from one of those systems then there's no need to jump ship.

What dSLR camera do you have?

It is best to stick with the camera system you have.

At present, the Nikon cameras have better sensor performance than other brands at high ISO settings.

Here are the two most popular top end, entry level cameras sensors compare, head to head

The most popular single lens solution is a lens like the 18-200 mm lens

Stick with whatever system you have right now. This way all your lenses will be compatible.

I.e. If you have a Nikon or Fujifilm (e.g. S5 Pro), get a new Nikon

If you have a Canon, get a new Canon,

If you have a Minolta, or a Sony, get a Sony,

If you have an Olympus, get an Olympus

If you want the best digital camera bar none then it's a Hasselblad.
