All depends on how wide you want to go. There's a 19-35 f3.5-4.5 lens that was sold under many, many brand names from the late 80s until well into the 90s (tokina, tamron, quantaray, phoenix and rokinon). That's an AF lens with an aperture ring which would work well with your camera as well as most digital bodies. Long out of production but a good used copy can be had for around $100.

Wide would be anything lower than 40mm on your camera. Take a look at this link for what exactly is compatible for the FM.

It sounds like you, for some reason, are trying to use modern auto focus lenses with a vintage manual focus body. I have no idea why you'd think this is a good idea.

The proper Nikkor lenses for the FM are AI and AIS which were made around the tyme that that body was. And yes, there are many many wide angle and other lenses that work with the FM. Probably hundreds.

Forget the Tamron zoom garbage and start using Nikkor prime lenses. Using off brand lenses on a quality name-brand camera is like putting a Toyota engine in Porsche. You will see this camera come to life and it will feel and work much faster and be more enjoyable to use all around. Manual zoom lenses are slow to use and do not have very large maximum apertures as well are the optics usually very poor quality by comparison to prime lenses. If you buy AI and AIS lenses, they will feel right at home on the sturdy, metal FM.

A good budget Nikon 28mm 2.8 lens is the Series E. If you want the best Nikkor 28mm 2.8, the AIS is probably one of the best lenses they've ever made. There are also 28mm f2 and 24m Nikkors and wider.

Check out this link and prepare to have your mind blown with the possibilities of amazing manual focus lenses available for the FM:

Buy lenses at KEH.com or CollectibleCameras.com. Don't look for them at Ritz/Wolf or whatever strange place you've been looking!

Yeah, thats right, you do need something compatible with AI. For wider than 28mm, I have come across the Tokina 17mm f3.5 SL, for Nikon AI. It should give full function on your FM. I can also tell you the 17mm is a very good optic, and I can recommend that.
