Which is better Bokeh? Nikkor 50mm F/1.8G or 35mm F/1.8G?
Which is better Bokeh? Nikkor 50mm F/1.8G or 35mm F/1.8G?
50 f/1.8 has more bokeh.
These are two different lenses for two different situations. The 50mm is medium telephoto and the 35mm is wide angle.
They are both good for producing great limited depth of field, but whether or not that produces good bokeh or not is highly subjective.
They both have 7 blade aperture diaphragms, which means that out-of-focus light sources will produce hex-shaped patterns. This is not as desireable as rounded light sources, but its something again that is subjective. Some manufacturers have gone to rounding their diaphragms to provide more rounded light sources.
I use a Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 which has 9 aperture blades, and I think it is better in that regard.
If you are looking for portraiture, the 35mm will not be as desirable. While it will have an effective focal length of 52mm on a DX camera, it still retains the 35mm lens characteristics, namely perspective distortion.
Due to perspective distortion, wide angle lenses are not normally considered good portrait lenses.
