What is reproduction ratio on telephoto lenses?
I'm looking at an AF-S NIKKOR 28-300 f/3.5-5.6G ED VR and it says that the reproduction ratio is.32x while the zoom ratio is at 10.7x. I'm confused as to what reproduction ratio is. I understand zoom, but what does reproduction ratio tell me?
If you shoot something at closeup it will appear 1/3 of the real size. Zoom ratio is simple 300 divided over 28, pretty meaningless. That expensive lens will leave you without much wideangle on anything below a d700
A reproduction ratio is how large the image on the sensor is in comparison to the actual subjects size when the lens is at its closest focus. It has NOTHING to do with the range of the zoom which is calculated by dividing the longest focal length bu the shortest or 300/28 = 10.7
If you were looking at a macro lens, the reproduction ratio of 1x of such a lens
The 28-300 mm is designed to do the same thing on a full frame lens as the 18-200 mm does using a APS-C sensored dSLR
