Macro lens for Nikon camera?

Which macro lens is better, the 40mm 2.8 or 35mm 1.8? I'm not looking for an official macro lens but something close enough in the under $300 range. Lens will be for a Nikon and would prefer Nikon/Nikkor brand. Know of a better one and why?

The 35mm is not a macro lens

the 40mm is. So that is the one you can afford and get.

Macro use depends on two things. Distance from the subject and reproduction ratio. If you are concerned with how near you want to get, check minimum focusing distance. If you want exact measurements, see ratios (1:1=life size, 1:2=half, etc.).

If you ever see a macro lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.8, sell all your earthly possessions for it.

35mm f/1.8 is not a macro lens, while 40mm f/2.8 is and it's the best thing you can get for your money right now!
