Is this lens worth $1000?
I've been struggling to decide if I should get a 1K lens.
I'm talking about the Nikon 24mm PC-E f/3.5D ED Tilt-Shift ( http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...ikkor.html" class='ext_link'>http://www.bhphotovideo.com/...ikkor.html )
I know it's worth more than 2K (new), but it seems a very specialized lens and you can find it used for roughly the same price.
So my question is? Why does the price of such lens drops that much?!

They are a very special lens used for a specific purpose
For those who need one, it is certainly worth the price.
If you do NOT have a need for one, then from time to time, rent it.
Justifying purchasing any camera gear must include an estimated time when you as the photographer expects the gear to pay for itself. This is usually from 12 to 18 months in most cases.
This year I will have spent about $5,500 on replacement cameras bodies and another $3,800 in one lens.
Since I only replace my cameras about every six to eight years, I have had plenty of time to save my pennies along the way. The lens is one that is replacing an older lens which needs more attention that I want to spend on it. It has been doing a fine job since 1996 and now it is time to retire it and get an new version It is not worth anything if you don't need it. If you do need a tilt-shift lens, then it is one of her best. Your question is a little ambiguous, but if you're asking why a $2k lens is available for $1k then it's either old and well used, or someone doesn't know the value of it, or it's stolen, or it's not working properly. I doubt it's a grey market copy because they're not half price. Top of the range lenses like that will hold their value well unless something's up with them.
Is this a private sale or in a shop? That is a lens of special purpose. The question should be: how much more than $1000 will I earn using this lens. In most cases you don't need it for amateur photography. What camera will you be using it on? That lens is best used on a full-frame camera body to take full advantage of its covering power.
And I assume you do frequently want to photograph tall buildings for which the shift is indeed an advantage. (Note that you can make similar corrections in Photoshop etc) It's an extremely niche lens. Are you doing tilt shift photos? How many? Do you know how to use a TS lens? You can buy the Rokinon/Samyang 24mm TS lens brand new for far less than the Nikon used. Both will produce very similar photos.
