Is it okay to use screw in lens hood on Nikkor 55-200mm?
Is it okay to use screw in lens hood on Nikkor 55-200mm?
Yes.
Yes. Why not?
# The primary use for a lens hood is to prevent light from hitting the front lens element from the sides, thus minimizing flares and increasing contrast in the image.
# A secondary use for a lens hood is to protect the lens. The damage prevented can range from a finger-printed front element (a minor inconvenience) to a broken front element (possibly a major expense).
# Lens hoods on longer focal length lenses offer more front lens element protection from rain and dust.
# You may like to remove the hood when using direct flash, where the additional width and length of the hood would block the flash light and cause a shadow, or block an in-flash light sensor
# It may also cause vignetting while shooting wide angle
Yes, but you may not be able to use your lens cap with the lens hood on.
Check out the Polaroid brand lens hoods. They are about the only thing they make these days that is any good. They have a pushbutton kind of attachment - sort of like how the lens cap attaches. This allows you to quickly attach and remove the lens hood without having to unscrew it.
I bought one, and I actually found that my lens cap would still work with the Polaroid lens hood. Filters would not work unless you put them on the lens first.
They are a bit more expensive than the cheapest ones, but still a lot less expensive than the Nikon replacements.
Just make sure you buy the one having the correct filter size.
