Nikon SLR Cameras

Is it a good idea to buy both of these lenses?

Currently, I have saved up a lot of money and I would like to invest into some new glass I have been asked to do some portraiture and I was wondering if I should get a 50mm AND an 85mm or just one of the two.

Here are the two lenses I have been talking about:

Which one is best for portraiture? Or do you recommend having both?

85mm for portraiture.

That focal length with a 1.8 aperture will make for better portraits than the 50mm.

If you do not have a full frame sensor, I suggest you get the 50mm f1.4 not 1.8. There's a big difference. If you have a full frae sensor the 85mm is a better choice though I would suggest the f1.4 if you have the $$

Get both. The 50mm would be great if you want to stay very close to your subject. It will also be useful for half-body shots or whole body shots from a short distance. The 85mm would push you further away but will be better if you need that distance to work on for portraits. If you only have to get one, get the 50mm.

There's no best.

An 85 works easier for headshots from a bit more distance or more crops from the 50mm distance. A 50mm makes for working in a bit closer.

If you've got a lot saved up I'd say rent them before buying.http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/nikon/lenses
