How far can a person be away with a Nikkor 55-300 lens and still look good in a picture?

Freeman
I'm looking at buying a Nikkor 55-300mm lens and was wondering how far someone can be away from me and still get a good picture of them.

Subdued Technicolour
Max 36 feet - If taking photos of people get as close as possible. Avoid that police surveillance look. Use normal & wideangle focal lengths for people. 55-300mm focal length zoom is all telephoto, go train spotting with it.
