The f/2.8 maximum aperture is great for low-light situations, but you may find the 50mm wide end a bit confining. For my travel lens (when I take only one lens), I use the Nikon 18-200mm AF-S VR. It's compact and gives me a very nice range. Any zoom will be softer than a prime, but you can't beat the versatility.

The most used single lens solution used by travelers is actually the 18-200 mm lens It has a wider zoom range, which includes a wide angle field of view and a longer telephoto field of view.

The D7100 can use any auto-focus lens made by Nikkor (a more robust lens), Tokina, Sigma and Tamron lens. I suggest you spend some more time doing the research before buying that lens or any other.

While the Sigma 50-150mm is a superb lens, it's a rather large lens. In fact it is about the same size and weight as the typical 70-200mm f/2.8. For me, such a lens is too cumbersome for travel.

Essentially it's a sports lens.

I own a Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 that I use for sports and action photography, but when I'm traveling, I use a Nikon AF-S 18-200 as I'm willing to accept it's limitations in this limited purpose for the trade off of being a lighter lens for travel purposes.

I also have a Nikon D7100.
