So i'm now a senior in highschool and haven't taken much pictures of events, friends etc. Because my mom uses my camera. My parents told me to choose a camera or tv since i've been great the whole year, is this a good camera? I like how light and smile it it and the lenses. I can buy it from $500-550, thanks.

$500 could buy you a D3100, an actual DSLR.

But if you want a compact interchangeable lens camera, get a Sony NEX series camera instead.

You're asking about an EVIL camera. I'd say if you're just a snapper and not really serious about photography buy a cheap pocket toy and not some $600 play thing.

If you're really serious about photography, want to learn and improve then buy a dslr.

While the J1 is better than compact cameras (point & shoots), they are not as good as DSLRs. So they are kind of in between.

While there's nothing wrong with that as the J1 offers a good camera in a lightweight package. But if you start buying lenses, you would be better off with a DSLR.

Also you might want to look at the Sony NEX5 if you are really interested in the J1.It is about the same size as the J1, but has a DSLR sized sensor - which means it is a step up from the J1.

So it really depends where you want to take your photography hobby.

If you're a senior highschool looking for a good camera, I prefer that you select the nicest lenses digital camera that has an image stabilization system. Check this out maybe this will work for you.
