Is Nikon View NX2 any good?
Just bought a Nikon Compact for my Wife and go a CD of View NX2… I already have Gimp2 and Paint.net… Are there any advantages in installing NX2 as well or am I just cluttering up my computer?
Actually when processing RAW files it is one of the best. It does not have a lot of the bells and whistles that Lightroom 3 has, but in head to head tests, the RAW processing is the best of the two.
If adding NX2 to your computer is cluttering it up, then your hard drive is far too small to deal with handling digital images.
I use a 2 tb external hard drive when on assignment and using my notebook computer. I store all my image files on it and when I get back to the office, I can copy them to my desktop computer.
If you need to free up space on the hard drive you have, you will want to copy all your wife's image files to CD's or DVD's as backup if nothing else.
My notebook's hard drive has the operating system, Adobe Photoshop CS5, Extended, Lightroom 3 and Microsoft Office. Any files like Word documents, Excel invoices or spread sheets as well as all my image files, all go to specific file folders on the 2 tb external drive. That means that my hard drive has over 2/3rds of its storage capacity empty. This speeds up the computer, since the more empty space your boot drive has, the faster the page files can be utilized
View NX2 is not so much of an editing program as it is a catalog and viewing application.
