I have a nikon d3300 but when i'm recording myself i can't see if i'm in focus or even in the frame.
is there an external screen of some sort that i could use so i could point the camera towards myself and see what the camera sees?

You can connect your camera to a monitor (TV, computer, or monitor specifically made for shooting video) that supports a HDMI input. See page 217 and 218 in your manual.

There are "field monitors" which are small HDMI monitors that you can plug into the camera to see what the sensor sees.

But for the money - you can probably purchase a Canon Vixia RF500 for $250 which does a better job, has a flip-forward screen, microphone input and does not do video as a second-order feature.

A DSLR is an expensive tool optimized for still-shots, and video is added as an afterthought. Wait until you see how slow & poor the auto focus is, and the camera shuts down after 15 minutes of recording because of over-heating.

The other obvious solution - have someone behind the camera. Good YouTube channels have a group of guys working on scripts, lighting, camera, acting, editing. Sure - it looks like 1 guy being casual, but it takes 3-5 guys to make it look that simple.

Since it has LiveView, I think it's possible. Check the manual. You will most likely need a portable monitor (~7in.) with HDMI input. Neewer makes some of them. You will also need stands or holders to attach the monitor and camera to. The best way is to ask the store what they have to offer.
