I'm going to be treating myself with one this weekend; however, with extensive research I have done, I found that many, many people are talking about a black screen.
They loved & used the camera for months, then all of a sudden, it went black & they had to send it back. It would get fixed but happen again. People are saying that this model is known for that.
I would hate to spend $600 on a camera & for this to happen. Anyone have experience with this? Should I buy it at Target & get an extended warranty protection or go with another camera?
Opinions? Thanks!

Added (1). I don't think it's a rumor. I got this information from its reviews on multiple websites from people that have actually bought the camera.

I think this problem was more with the D5000 than the D5100.

Nikon had a similar problem with the D70, and it happened to me. One day - about 2 years after buying it, it just quite working. When you turned it on, the memory card would light up for a second, but nothing else.

The problem ended up being a part on the circuit board that did not meet the quality specs that was specified. Nikon fixed any camera that had this problem at no cost - even if it was after the warranty period. Since that problem the camera has operated fine.

But at any rate, I have heard of this problem with the D5000, but not the D5100. Here is a bulletin from Nikon on the D5000 problem:

Funny how rumors spread on the internet.

I have the D5000, and have been very happy with it. The D5100 has been recently replaced by the D5200.
As for the D5100, I'd go for it. It's a great camera to have.

Look, every camera can have a thing that can be destroyed, it's not like all of those D5000 fell apart. The D5100 is a much better camera and also doesn't have problems like this.
