Nope.

Use MPEG StreamClip or HandBrake or any number of other transcoders to convert the video file to something more useful for you.

You might gain more favorable inisight at nikon's products forum. They have special section specific to your camera model.

i found one website touting *.mov format. And another website suggesting MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format. You definitely should check your owner-manual.

as to software conversion. There's all sorts of 'em on the internet. Be careful of malware and piggy-back downloads.

I'm almost certain you can't change the video type but you can check the camera's manual or dig deep into the camera's menu system to see if it's possible. It doesn't matter though. You record with the camera, copy the video to the computer then convert the mov file into something else you can work with. If you don't have a convert, try Video to Video. It's free.

Can't change the video format. You're stuck with MOV which contains a H.264 encoded video (also called MPEG-4 and AVC). I use ffmpeg (free and command line) if I need to change containers or formats.

No. You have about 3 dimension settings and varies frames per sec 30p50p60p etc and thats it. MOV is a Wrapper(container for) many types. In this case its MP4 H.264(AVC) which may be LARGE compared to an MP4 native file. VLCplayer will play it. And since VLCplayer uses FFMPEG, then FFMPEG should be able to Unwrap it if you like and create an MP4 version file from the AVC one and get a smaller file for not much loss in quality. If for instance you just copied one of the mov files to a TV recorder then it may not play properly because it needs a CODEC that understands the AVC content. But an MP4 file as converted by something such as FFMPEG may play ok. If thats the kind of thing you are having trouble with then just setting the setting for 25p(uk) 30p(US) might cure your problem with playback
