How are taxes refunded when you return a prodcut?

Please read before you answer as this is a bit more complex than normal.

I bought an expensive item at Walmart and it was past their refund/exchange policy. I call the manufacture and they were able to care for my issue. The only problem is that they couldnt replace the product as it was no longer available so they refunded me the amount i paid (as i provided my receipt for the purchase). They did not refund the taxes paid. They said that I would have to go to the vendor or the state…

I called Walmart and they said that they can't refund the taxes… So where do i go?

I got my check from Nikon (it was for a Camera bundle), priced at 3499… But now i need the 330 in taxes i paid…

It was past WalMart's refund period so there's no reason for them to give you back the taxes. You did extremely well to get the product price refunded. Be happy for getting something that Walmart's refund policy did not provide.

The manufacturer can't refund sales he never collected from you, it's that simple
you were extremely fortunate the manufacturer would do anything with an outdated product, consider yourself lucky you got what you did
of course Wal Mart can't refund the taxes, the didn't refund you the price of the product

State's control their own sales tax laws. Here in MA, you have 7 days to return a product and get your sales tax back (by law). Since most stores' return policies are at least as long as the requires, you probably do not have any recourse,

You should go to your state's Department of Taxation/Revenue website and look up the law regarding sales tax.

And now check with the state sales and use tax department in the local area where you did make this purchase with your sales receipt in your hand and see what they will be able to tell you about the sales tax amount that was collected from you for this sale and then sent on to them for this purpose at some time in the past for this purpose. GOOD LUCK.
