I'm thinking of doing photography classes in college and I'm going to get a good camera. Is Nikon cameras better or is Canon cameras better? Or another brand maybe nothing too expensive?

I always wanted a high end Canon. I just have a small hand held one.

What you could do is go on Amazon.com or Even those tv shopping networks online and see what customers say about their products. You know get peoples reviews.

I would definitely get a basic body camera. The best advice I've ever gotten is to never spend too much on the body of a camera because the money should go into good lenses. I personally have the Nikon D3100. Its new enough but also basic enough and I just add on really good lenses such as higher zoom and sport. Most of my friends vote for Canon-either one you get will be fine. Just go with the price that is right for you.
My Nikon D100 is awesome and it comes with the basic lense which will be perfect for starting off! It was only 600 dollars and you can get it even cheaper if you look.

Both Canon and Nikon make fine cameras. But there are other brands that are good, such as Sony, Pentax, etc, etc. There's no best brand.

Be aware when taking photography classes - you may need a film camera and not a digital camera - best to check with the course tutor to see what you need.

If you are worried about expense - an SLR camera is not going to be the most expensive part of your kit. It's the lenses that cost real money. Photography can be an expensive hobby.
