Help buying first DSLR?

>FIRST OF All I'm NOT PROFESSIONAL<
So my Nikon L20 point and shoot's lens got dented so I was thinking of upgrading to a DSLR.
I want to try and learn the manual modes and such.
But where I live (Malaysia) DSLRs are very expensive so I was wondering if there were any DSLR's within the US$500 (RM 1400) range with these qualities:
>Good photo quality
>Live View
>Easy to use for beginners
>Video perhaps?
>A good amount of pixels (10mpx?)
>Nikon/Canon (preferebly Nikon)
>Old or new versions

Go for Nikon D90 (12 MPx) or Cannon 550d (18 MPx)

If your budget is quite small (new lenses cost a lot!) you could get an advanced compact camera like the Canon S95 or G12, Samsung EX1, Lumix LX5, etc.
They offer manual control and better sensor/lens quality than a typical compact camera.
