Great SLR Camera under $300?

I really want a digital slr camera for a good price. I don't want to spend too much since I'm paying for it. I want one of those nice cameras that takes really good pictures, but I don't want to go broke. I have been told Canon and Nikon are good brands, but what edition or type should I get?

Entry level DSLRs start at $500 and go up to $8, 000 for the professional grade cameras.
Perhaps you can find a used one for $300.

Start looking at used ones. I've yet to see a DSLR for under $300. Nothing wrong with buying used! That way, you won't have a lot of money invested in it and if you decide later you really like a DSLR, you can save for a new one.
