Best compact camera I can get for under $300?

I'm looking to sell my Nikon D5000 and get a compact camera, can someone recommend the nicest one I can purchase for under $300, I travel a lot and take pictures of landscapes and portraits… Looking for very high resolution and color.

The compact hasn't been made that can match the performance of a DSLR.

Look for some of the older models of premium compacts. These models have been superseded by a newer version but are still available new and at a good discount. Examples would include the Canon s110 or Fujifilm X10.

A couple prices for you:
Canon PowerShot SX510 HS - $250
Pentax X5 - $185

Panasonic and Fujifilm have a couple of great options around the $300 mark, then there's Canon and Nikon with their popular models as well.
