Why will my DSLR not take pictures when my hotshoe flash is attached?

Nikon D300
Quantaray QTB-9500A flash. It works on my Nikon D80 but for some reason my D300 will not take photos when the flash is turned on.

Oddly enough, I have a D300 and a QTB-9500 right in front of me. The flash needs to be on full-manual or 1/16 power for it to fire. With the flash on auto, take a peek at 300's LCD screen and you'll notice the flash-setting indicator blinking.

and: NEVER BUY THIRD PARTY PRODUCTS. If the third party product broke your camera, Nikon/Canon(or whatever… ) will not repair it foir you even if it's under warranty.
