When a camera is discontinued, such as the nikon d200, what does that mean?

The camera does not necessarily go off the shelves. Nikon just stops producing it, but stores will/might still have it in stock for a while. For getting repairs, Nikon has to repair it for you as long as your warranty is still valid. As for accessories, they will usually be discontinued but shops might still have them in stock for a while. Also, if other cameras that Nikon produces share these accessories, the accessories will still be in production.

It just means that model is not made anymore. It shouldn't affect repairs or accessories. All the camera bodies from a particular manufacturer take the same lenses and accessories. The only exception would be if the lens mount were changed but that only happens once in a blue moon.

The D200 was discontinued long ago but getting it repaired should not be a problems since Nikon keeps spare parts for decades sometimes.

The Nikon F-mount has not changed since first introduced in 1959. I have a Nikon F4 that was introduced in 1977 and even now, I can use my old Nikkor AI manual lenses as well as the latest Nikkor AF-S lenses.

The D400 is on the horizon, so soon, the last Nikon D300s will be sold. They are all still viable cameras and do their job as the tools that were designed for use by photographers world wide

It only means that Nikon stopped making it. Years ago actually. But it's not a bad thing. All the lenses and accessories still work even now because Nikon can't change anything. They can still repair it, and you can still buy the batteries, charger etc.

Whatever worked on the d200 like flashes, tripods, whatever work with the D300, the D7000 and whatever camera nikon makes to replace the d300. Sometimes they will change memory card types, and batteries might change, but that's not unusual.

But being discontinued does not mean it's off the shelves. Sellers can have NOS (new old stock) for months or years. There could still be Nikon D200 bodies brand new floating around out there.
