What Nikon lens should I upgrade to? - 1

I'm starting to full body shoot basically photoshoots. I've had my kit lens for about year and i need to upgrade I've learned a lot from my kit lens. What lens should i get I've been doing many photoshoots! I have a Nikon D5100… Anything helps I was planning to get a d700 for my backup camera, I feel like I'm not safe with it, Though i had bought the camera separately then got my kit lens. So this camera is about 2 years old.

First off, what do you find your current lens to be lacking at?

Are you sure it is a D700 you have in mind? Using a $2300 full frame camera as a backup and a $500 one as the primary camera seems to make little sense to me.
Or is it the D7000? In that case too i'd make the D7000 the primary camera and relegate the D5100 back to be the backup. Both use the same sensor though.
Or an old D70?

The D5100 has been available for barely more than a year by the way. Might it be the D5000 that you have, not the D5100?

You are going to use a full frame D700 to backup an entry level D5100?

For full length figure shoots probably 35mm would be good, or 50mm if you have plenty of room. Just set your present lens to 35mm and to 50mm (just short of 55mm) and see which suits. In zooms the 18 to 85mm Nikor gets good reviews.

Why use one of the best cameras EVER as a backup camera, and use a "not so good" camera as main equipment! This is NONSENSE.

For the lens, I would sugest to buy a 85mm 1.8, it's one of the most used when in a fashion photoshoot, for exemple. And, a MUST HAVE should be a 50mm.

The lens used by many fashion photographers is the 24-70 mm f/2.8.It can be used to shoot your full body shots using either the D5100 or D700.

And I agree. You may want to use your D700 as the primary camera and the D5100 as your backup
